Thomson Reuters launches US$40 frontier model for talent, compute

Thomson Reuters launched its first proprietary large language model (LLM), investing US$40 million to train Thomson into the right intelligence for jobs including talent and compute.

The move marks a new chapter for the company as it has always owned the content, the expertise, and the tools professionals rely on every day.

The technological advancement, Thomson, starts from a strong open-source foundation, without the heavy inference costs of typical frontier models.

In a press release, it was highlighted that Thomson is a model built to Fiduciary-Grade TM standards, at a fraction of the typical cost.

As professionals zero in on AI sovereignty, which include how a model is trained, what behaviours and biases live inside it, where it runs, and how the privacy of their information is protected. Thomson answers these queries directly.

Further, Thomson is able to be trained alongside Thomson Reuters proprietary tools like Westlaw and Practical Law, which makes it more sophisticated and nuanced in its work.

Thomson’s first deployment is inside Tabular Analysis in CoCounsel Legal, the kind of high-volume, structured document review where a purpose-built model’s advantage shows up immediately.

Plans are being considered to extend Thomson models across the legal and tax portfolio with more sovereign AI options to follow.
