Editor’s note: In today’s A Day in the Life, Chairil Fadly Lubis (pictured), ACMA, CGMA, deputy controller at Shell Indonesia, shares with FutureCFO audiences how collaborating with CFOs, regional and global finance teams, and business leaders excites him and why maintaining an active lifestyle is a priority for him.
FutureCFO: What does a typical day look like for you?
Chairil Fadly Lubis (CFL): I usually start my day early and arrive at the office an hour before official time starts.
I enjoy making my morning coffee then review my schedule, mark meeting time and ensure any time sensitive deadlines are able to be met. This quiet hour helps me a lot to stay focused to prioritise the important tasks for efficient routine.
FutureCFO: What excites you the most when you work with the Finance Function?
CFL: One of the most exciting aspects of my role is navigating Indonesia’s complex and evolving fiscal and legal landscape.
The country presents unique financial and regulatory challenges that significantly impact business decisions. My responsibility extends beyond compliance—I helpensure the financial stability of the entities I oversee while enabling strategic growth within regulatory constraints.
In addition, aligning Shell Indonesia’s financial operations with Shell Global’s policies, including ethical and code of conduct requirements, is crucial.
I also manage finance projects that support business expansion, ensuring they adhere to budget and timeline commitments.
Collaborating with CFOs, regional and global finance teams, and business leaders allows me to provide both financial analysis and commercial insights, making a tangible impact on the company’s ambitions.
FutureCFO: Can you share an experience which was key to your professional growth?
CFL: My professional growth has been shaped by a supportive work environment that encourages continuous learning.
One pivotal moment was pursuing CGMA designation two years ago while balancing work responsibilities. This experience reinforced my ability to manage time effectively and further develop both my technical expertise and leadership skills.
Additionally, my current role challenges me to develop strategic thinking, financial acumen, and soft skills. All skills are essential for me to support my company and help me advancing in the finance function.
FutureCFO: Tell us something about yourself outside of work.
CFL: Beyond work, I prioritise maintaining an active lifestyle, particularly through tennis and gym workouts.
Engaging in sports not only helps me stay physically fit but also provides an opportunity to connect with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Tennis, in particular, offers a perfect blend of discipline, strategy, and social interaction, which I find beneficial both personally and professionally.
Regular gym workouts enhance my physical health, supporting my tennis training. Staying active keeps me energised and underscores the importance of a well-rounded life, contributing to my overall performance in the workplace.
