While various issues arise from work-from-home during the pandemic such as how to maintain network security and a corporate culture, technology heavyweight Google announced lately that it will extend its work-from-home order to through June 2021.
“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to employees.
Google, a unit of Alphabet, earlier said staffers should expect to return to the office in January 2021.
The new announcement will affect nearly all of Google’s 200,000 employees, including contractors and full-time workers, according to The Wall Street Journal which first reported the news.
Google is not alone in extending its work-from-home order.
Facebook said in May that it will allow many of its 50,000 staffers to work from home on a permanent basis. The social media giant’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he expects about half of Facebook’s workforce to work remotely.
Twitter has already allowed employees to work home forever if they wish while Amazon and Apple said employees are expected to return to their offices in January 2021.
