Editor’s note: In today’s A Day in the Life, Kanruthai Somchitrmool (pictured), Manager - Commerce Finance Division, Robert Walters, shares with FutureCFO audiences how her external auditing background helps her current role as a team leader of recruitment consultants specialising in financial executives and how health and wellness habits contribute to success in her professional role.
FutureCFO: What does a typical day look like for you?
Kanruthai Somchitrmool (KS): As the team leader of recruitment consultants specialising in financial professionals, my days are rich with interactions, both internally and externally.
My workday begins with a daily team meeting, where we share market insights, discuss key players, and review recent news such as that related to business and talent movements.
This routine helps us kickstart our day with focus. Throughout the day, I meet with candidates and clients, as I believe face-to-face interactions are essential.
These meetings allow me to understand their aspirations, needs, and organisational contexts on a deeper level.
Each day is unique—I might start the morning managing an offer and celebrating with a successful candidate over lunch; and later I may engage in negotiations with clients or attend networking events.
Establishing a routine workout, a planned diet, and disciplined self-care significantly boosted my productivity and job performance.
FutureCFO: What excites you the most when you work with finance leaders?
KS: This current role affords me the privilege of engaging with finance leaders and thought leaders across various fields.
My background as an external auditor granted me exposure to these individuals, but as a recruitment consultant, I leverage this access to identify and align the right talent with my clients' business objectives—this is particularly important in finance, which is increasingly vital to business dynamics.
Beyond professional objectives, working with finance leaders is a personal growth opportunity. The insights I gain are as rewarding as completing a leadership workshop or earning a degree.
FutureCFO: Can you share an experience that was key to your professional growth?
KS: My professional growth is not solely about enhancing business performance but also about developing as a leader and fostering the growth of others within an organisation.
People development has been pivotal to my career, impacting both myself and those involved in this journey.
The recruitment business where I'm in is all about people—so not only do we help clients identify talent for their organisations, but we also help their teams achieve goals such as those related to financials, income or career development.
FutureCFO: Is there anything outside work—such as travel, a book, sports, or volunteering—that inspires your work or life?
KS: I've realised over the years that being disciplined and resilient are crucial traits for success in my role.
Initially, as a junior, I didn't fully grasp this. However, during the pandemic, as human behaviour shifted, I became interested in health and wellness.
Establishing a routine workout, a planned diet, and disciplined self-care significantly boosted my productivity and job performance.
I continue these routines, and recently, I've added early morning runs before work. This new habit energises my day and enhances my productivity and focus.
